Impacts of the government´s decision to intervene in fare pricing policies within passenger railway transportation. Comparison between Czech and Slovak markets.
Lofaj, Jakub ; Tomáš,, Gnap (referee) ; Bočková, Nina (advisor)
The subject of the diploma´s thesis is the comparison of the particular private rail transport policies in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. There are specific, both economic and non-economic impacts of a free fare in Slovakia and slightly different policy of fare discounts in the Czech Republic, identified and consequently analyzed in the thesis. Comparative analysis between both policies is conducted right after. All the impacts are measured and evaluated in the context of particular government budgets, both national and private railway transporters and different segments of users, who are mostly affected by the movement. The analysis of these extraordinary government policies is conducted based on selected publicly available indicators and data from several different sources (official statistics, agreements, annual reports, tariffs comparison, financial statements, granted subsidies etc.).
Comparison of the liberalisation of the railway passenger transport market on the example of the Czech Republic and Austria
Zajíc, Marek ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Volf, Jaromír (referee)
The subject of this diploma thesis is a comparison of the liberalisation of passenger rail transport on the example of the Czech Republic and Austria. Based on the legislative framework of the European Union, which both countries have to follow not merely in the field of transport policy, the aim of the thesis is to compare the situation in the two neighbouring Central European countries. Regarding the research, literature and other sources, the thesis focuses on a comparative analysis of how the two countries, comparable in terms of size and population, approach liberalisation. In this thesis, I conclude that the liberalization of the EU passenger rail market process in the Czech Republic and Austria through railway packages is undertaken by different methods. Whilst in the Czech Republic the "vertical separation" is used, where the infrastructure manager and carrier are two different subjects, which leads to business competition objectivity, in Austria the infrastructure manager and the carrier remain in one holding arrangement in relation to the subsidiary companies. It is important to analyse both of the approaches continuously, especially with regard to the period of 2023-2033, which is to be the last transitional decade, followed by absolute liberalisation of the passenger rail market....
Competition Protection in Network Industries
Zajíček, Miroslav ; Tomášek, Michal (advisor) ; Bažantová, Ilona (referee) ; Ježek, Tomáš (referee)
Title: Competition Protection in Network Industries Abstract: I provide description of relevant markets within electroenergy industry in European countries since after liberalization movements of the last 20 years the development of these markets open new issues in antimonopoly legislation to be passed and in antimonopoly practice to be solved. The key term of any antimonopoly issue is the relevant market. Hence, its definition as provided by case law of European Commission and European Courts is crucial for companies as well as regulators to understand in order to be able to pursue their activities. As I show, after 20 or so years, the countries of the EU at least in electroenergy area are no closer to the Single Market as they were at the beginning of 90s before liberalization of electricity markets began and there is no sign of improvement for year to come. This thesis provides an overview (the tools and analyses) that can be used to explore individual national relevant markets in the area of electroenergy business. For further research it is worth exploring detailed analysis of relationship between price development and degree of competition, phasing of market opening, protection of small consumers and RES support within individual national energy systems. Keywords: competition, competition law and...

Ekonomický nacionalismus jako historicko-sociologický fenomén
Gheorghiev, Olga ; Maslowski, Nicolas (advisor) ; Klepárník, Vít (referee)
This thesis analyses economic nationalism from a historical perspective and it examines its forms and transformation based on the case study of France. The first chapter offers a brief introduction to the concept of economic nationalism. It places it into a larger context and it addresses its elements, forms and particularities. The following section attempts at a closer look at the doctrines of economic nationalism, emphasising differences in policy content in correlation with historical and political context. The third chapter closely examines the evolution of the French economic thinking within the process of nation-state building and economic modernisation. It attempts at tracing elements of economic nationalism and observing their transformation within changing historical circumstances. Finally, the last chapter focuses on the occurrence of economic nationalism within the French economic model in the twentieth century and under conditions of accelerated markets liberalisation and economic integration.

The effect of the entry of private open-access operators on the performance of railways
Turek, Tomáš ; Vejchodská, Eliška (advisor) ; Louda, Jiří (referee)
This thesis aspires to contribute to the discussion about economic justification of current process of railway liberalisation in European Union and specifically in Czech Republic. We focus on the method of vertical separation and open access, where governments keep control over the infrastructure and its development and individual train operators compete on-track. The first section contains a summary of progress of the reform and its historical context across Europe and a review of various methods of its economic evaluation. Based on that, the next section presents a partial equilibrium econometric model applied on the route between Prague and Ostrava. Simulations are run to explore different market settings, infrastructure investment possibilities and potential tolls imposed on individual road transportation. We conclude that liberalisation followed by entry of competing railway undertakings, as well as a rational attitude of the government towards long-term infrastructure investments, are crucial for future competitiveness of railways.
